Turkey Drive: Once again, it was a wonderful experience in meeting and greeting our Redwood City neighbors and visibly demonstrating what a great organization Kiwanis is in serving the community. The day started a little before 8:30 a.m. with Teresita from the Redwood City Kiwanis overseeing set-up and with invaluable assistance from Craig Thorson, his son Jeff Thorson and their out of state guest Bob as well as George Kerewicz and myself.
We covered the two entrances at Lucky at Woodside Plaza. I have to say George had a great way of engaging shoppers and answering questions!
Then Donna Vallaincourt came for a couple of hours and also generously donated a couple of turkeys and other groceries to 'prime the pump' or demonstrate that the empty carts by our table were for food donations!
Eight Key Club members participated throughout the day and John Farley was particularly impressed to hear about the Key Club WTAM sponsors and had his conversation with them videotaped for the Channel 11 News. When Larry Graves, Bill Morris and Carol Stewart arrived, I took the time to walk over to past member Robert Rule's place of work, and guess what -- he donated $250 towards the drive! Also, helping at the collection and donating, we had friend of the club, Mike O'Neill, someone who was helped by our club in the past through our support of the Service League!
The afternoon crew included new member Liz Pollard, Bill Morris, and Roy Souffront. Al Quebec and Donna Vailancourt also helped out. By then, members of the Redwood City Club arrived as Farmer's Market was over. We pretty much covered both entrances up until then, except for Teresita, and it was a good thing to have Craig triple his outreach through Jeff and Bob!
Overall, turkeys were more expensive, and there was no 'two for one' as in the past. Also, some people were having tough times themselves Still, it was heartwarming to experience the generosity when a can or two, a $10 or $20 bag, or a dollar or twenty, was contributed along with appreciation for the work of Kiwanis in helping make for a blessed Thanksgiving for those in need.
Caroline McHenry did an outstanding job in organizing and coordinating all the details, so that even in her absence, as she couldn't be everywhere at once, it all worked successfully!
Thanks to all..
Elizabeth
