2007-2008 Installation Dinner September 23rd at the Women’s Club.
Thank you everyone for a fantastic Installation Dinner. A special thanks to Lourdes for sponsoring our club at the Women's Center, and to Maureen, Beth, Donna and Nicole for setting up. Glenn Lew did a great job as MC and entertainment. A few items of note: Elizabeth was inducted as a life time member. Lynne was awarded Kiwanian of the Year. Sorry I lost track of all of the 100% attendance awards. (Remember you can make up a missed meeting with service projects, interclubs and board meetings.) Past Lt. Governor Larry Graves retired the officers and board members for 2006-2007 and Lt. Governor Elect Bill Menafra installed the officers and board members of 2007-2008.
Lt. Governor Installation
Larry Graves and Mike Akana attended the Lt. Governor Bill Menafra’s installation on September 30. The installation was held at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto. There was a great barbeque with plenty of good food. Bill said “Thanks so much for coming to my Installation. It was very, very, special to have you there. So what do ya think of the Lt. Governor being installed in a tree house? Honestly, the very best part for me was being surrounded by "my kids" while addressing the rest of the people attending. I will never ever forget the moment.”
From 2006.....
Debunking the Old and Installing the New (…and what a great cake)!
You could almost feel the rushing of the big blue Hawaiian waves and the warmth of white sandy beaches, while fearlessly wading through the school of sharks…oh, it was just a cake!!
On Sunday, October 1, 2006 The Woodside Terrace A.M. Kiwanis Club held their Debunking of 2004-2005 Officers, and Installation of new 2006-2007 Officers, at The Sequoia Yacht Club in Redwood City, sponsored by lifetime club member, the late Geri Mayers and son Fred.
A memorial with Geri’s many accomplished Kiwanis pins were displayed on her infamous well-weighted vest, and in glass frames. Pictures showing her love of her family were included along side of her prized collection. A dignified vase of pink flowers were placed on the table respectively. Glenn Lew and his one-man band cheerfully “mastered” the ceremonies with his interactive renditions of “Lean on Me”, and “Turn, Turn, Turn” (and Cal cheers, “Go Bears”) in-between introductions of past and present officers.
Speaking of Cal Bears…Mel Cohn and his wife Nita, from the San Carlos club was there, and he just celebrated 59 years as a member in his club, which matches the amount of years in marriage. Incoming President and Stanford grad, David Amann found that he is somewhat outnumbered by the bears in his club.
(Did I mention the great cake)?
Maureen Fish and her group of coordinators (Beth, Larry, George and Jan Borg, and Lourdes) did a beautiful job on the tropical room decorations and the Pacific Island catering. Carole Stewart brought a cake…(what a great cake) that looked like a 3-D postcard of Hawaii…in detail! Lou and Rose Romano again donated the beautiful assorted autumn potted flowers as our centerpieces.
(…the cake was also very delicious)!
Past Lt. Governor, Greg Rubens debunked President Lourdes Carini, President Elect, David Amann, President Designate, Bill Morris, Immediate Past President Donna Vaillancourt, Secretary, Lynne Mercer, Treasurer, Bill Lowell and Board Members; Mike Akana, Larry Graves, Andrew Newman, Harry Tong, Girdie Bernard, and Maureen Fish. Current Lt. Governor, Dan Hoppe, and wife Bonnie were also there. Dan installed our new Officers; President, David Amann, President Elect, Bill Morris, Immediate Past President, Lourdes Carini, Secretary, Lynne Mercer, and Treasurer, Maureen Fish, as well as new Board members; Mike Akana, Girdie Bernard, Margie Carrington, Larry Graves, Melanie Souffront, and Donna Vaillancourt. Lourdes gave a heartfelt speech with a lot of gratitude for our club members for all of our hard work on our many projects. She gave Appreciation awards to Committee Chairs; Al Quebec, Mike Akana, Carol Stewart, George and Jan Borg, Bill Lowell, Glenn Lew, George Kerewicz, Donna Vaillancourt, Larry Graves, Melanie and Roy Souffront, Elizabeth Gheleta, Barbara Liedtke, and Maureen Fish. Lourdes also gave new Leadership awards to all of the Officers for 2005-2006. The Kiwanian of the Year award was well deserved by Larry Graves, who Lourdes dubbed, “Father Larry” who brings his positive attitude into every aspect of our club . Special Dunlap awards were given to both Roy and Melanie Souffront who share them with all of their children who are always ready and willing to help in our projects.
David Amann wrapped up the night with a very animated and inspiring speech about his view of Kiwanis and our members. First Lady Kelli was anxious to seek advice from former First Ladies, as well as First Gent, Pete Carini.
One more surprise guest was “Kiwanian-by-birth”, Isaac and his Kiwanian Mother, Jasmine Freeman, who came with Grandma Donna Vaillancourt. After a great meal, and a fun program full of singing and laughter, (and, I know I mentioned the cake…), the night was complete with debunking and installing, and happy Kiwanis families.
Thanks to George Kerwicz for photographing the event, and to PDI for printing the programs.

Lt. Governor Installation
Nine Woodside Terrace AM Kiwanis members and their guests attended the Lt. Governor installation Friday, August. 25, at Michael’s restaurant in Mountain View. About 100 people attended altogether, including our new Cal-Nev-Ha Governor, George Francis, and at least 10 past Lt. Governors! This year was a bit unusual because not only did they retire our Division 34 Lt. Governor Greg Rubens, but also, at least unofficially, Jo Wu from the now defunct Division 17. Our new lt. Governor, Dan Hoppe, is from the Mountain View club.
A no host cocktail hour preceded the banquet, and we were entertained, both before and after dinner, by a Flamenco dance troupe. The meal was very good, and it is a pretty setting … if you can find it! Michael’s is way, way, way down at the end of Shoreline, set along the golf course. It is easy to think you might have missed it!
The District mascot this year is the bald eagle, and our division is the only one in the world to have won double eagles in one single year for 100% representation of delegates at both the international and district conventions. Each table had 2 eagles and attendees were invited to auction them off to raise money for the Lt. Governor’s autism awareness project. Our club raised $25 and a total of over $700 was raised overall. Our new Lt. Governor, Dan Hoppe, has promised to continue the autism awareness project.
Of course, one of the highlights of the Lt. Governor installation is the presentation of the Mort Korengold Kiwanian of the Year Award. This award is in honor of Mort Korengold, a San Carlos Kiwanian who passed away some years ago while he was serving as President. Last year our own Glenn Lew was the winner. This year it was presented to William(Bill) Becker of the San Carlos club.
It was a very nice evening (another interclub too!) and a good start to the upcoming new Kiwanis year!
